60 x 30 alcove bathtub with a front skirt and left drain, installed between three tiled walls

Bathtub Sizes Chart: 60x30 to 72x42 (Alcove, Drop-In & Corner)

Most people shopping for a new bathtub start with two numbers: 60 x 30, 60 x 42, 72 x 42. Those are the tub's length and width in inches, and they are the quickest way to narrow a search. They don't tell the whole story, though. A tub's real measurements, how it is installed and which end the drain is on all decide whether it fits. To build this chart, we sorted every alcove, drop-in and corner bathtub in our catalog by size on October 2, 2026: 390 listings from Atlantis Whirlpool, Anzzi and Lexora, with the actual dimensions, water depth and drain position each listing gives.

This guide covers built-in tubs. For tubs that stand on their own, see Freestanding Tub Sizes: What to Expect at Every Length. For tubs with a door, browse our walk-in tubs.

The short answer

  • Alcove tubs are 60 inches long. Every alcove tub we carry is 60 x 30 or 60 x 32.
  • 72 x 42 has the most choices: 57 models, followed by 60 x 60 corner tubs (48) and then 60 x 36 and 72 x 36 (37 each).
  • The name isn't the measurement. A tub sold as 42 x 72 can measure 70.75" x 41.625". Plan from the spec sheet.
  • A bigger tub isn't much deeper. Listed water depths run from 13" to 18.375" across every size in this chart.

Bathtub sizes chart

Sizes are length x width in inches. "Measures" is the range of overall dimensions in the listings at each size. "Models" counts every listing, so the same tub with a different jet package or drain side counts separately.

Water depth is the soaking depth given in each listing's specifications; "(15 of 17)" means 15 of the 17 listings at that size give it. Atlantis means Atlantis Whirlpool. Lexora's Provenza comes in 60 x 30 and 60 x 32, and Anzzi's Illyrian in 72 x 36 and 72 x 32, so each one is counted at both sizes. Twelve listings don't state an installation type (Anzzi's Illyrian and Alya, and nine Atlantis IndulgenceWaterfall ovals), so they are marked "not stated."

Alcove, drop-in or corner?

Alcove

An alcove tub fits into a recess with walls on three sides, usually with a shower above it. Only the front is exposed, so alcove tubs come with a finished front, called a skirt or apron. Every alcove tub we carry is 60 inches long: the Atlantis Soho in 60 x 30 and 60 x 32 (12 listings: soaking, whirlpool or air), the Anzzi Saba in 60 x 30, and the Lexora Provenza in 60 x 30 or 60 x 32.

Planning a glass door instead of a curtain? The Vinnova Villena and Vinnova Spezia sliding tub doors are listed at 60" W x 58" H.

Drop-in

A drop-in tub is set into a deck, a framed platform that you build and finish with tile or stone. The tub's rim rests on top of the deck, so only the inside of the tub shows. Because the deck can be built to any shape, a drop-in tub isn't tied to a 60-inch opening. It can go into an alcove, along one wall or out in the room. Nearly every size in our catalog that is wider than 32 inches or longer than 60 inches is a drop-in tub, from 60 x 30 all the way to 84 x 43.

An undermount tub uses the same kind of deck, but the finished deck surface covers the rim. None of the listings in this chart describe an undermount installation, so if that's the look you want, contact us before you order.

Corner

A corner tub fits into a corner with an angled or curved front, which leaves the rest of each wall free. All 48 corner tubs we carry are 60 x 60 models (sometimes called 5-foot corner tubs): 46 from Atlantis Whirlpool and 2 from Anzzi. Atlantis lists its corner tubs as drop-in, so plan for a corner deck. We don't currently carry a 48 x 48 corner tub.

How to measure for a new tub

Alcove: wall to wall

  • Measure the length of the recess from wall to wall at the back, the middle and the front. Use the smallest of the three.
  • Measure the depth from the back wall to the open front edge. The alcove tubs we carry are 30 or 32 inches front to back.
  • If you're replacing a tub, note which end the drain is on now. Switching sides means moving the drain plumbing.

Drop-in: the tub plus the deck

  • Start with the tub's overall length and width from the spec sheet, then add the deck ledge you want around it. The deck is what has to fit the room.
  • The tub's height sets the height of the deck, because the rim rests on top of it. The drop-in tubs in this chart list 23" to 25" tall, and most list 23".
  • Cut the deck opening to the manufacturer's installation instructions, not to the size in the product name.
  • Jetted tubs list a pump or blower location. Plan a removable access panel in the deck on that side.

Corner: check the drawing

  • Measure each wall out from the corner.
  • Our 60 x 60 corner tubs list overall dimensions of 82" to 85" by 61.5" to 67.125", which don't map neatly onto two 60-inch walls. (For reference, a straight line between the ends of two 60-inch walls is about 85 inches.) Get the installation drawing for the exact model and check both wall lengths against it before you frame the deck.

The path into the room

  • Most of these listings say curbside delivery only: the carrier unloads the tub from the truck, and getting it inside is up to you or your installer.
  • Listed empty weights run from 100 to 190 lbs, so plan on two people.
  • Carried on its side, a tub's height (23" for most models here) is the dimension that has to fit through each doorway, plus the packaging. Hallway turns and stair landings are where the full length has to swing, so measure those too.

Nominal size vs. actual size

A tub's name uses round numbers (the nominal size). The measurements on the spec sheet often don't match exactly. A few examples from the chart:

The differences are usually an inch or two. The alcove tubs in this chart are all listed at exactly 60" long, and for a drop-in tub you can frame the deck to the real measurements, as long as you go by the spec sheet and not the name.

Left drain or right drain?

Stand outside the tub and face it. If the drain is at your left, it's a left-drain tub; if it's at your right, it's a right-drain tub. This matters most for an alcove tub, because the drain end has to line up with the drain plumbing under the floor, and the faucet and shower valve usually go on the wall at that same end.

  • 60 x 30: 9 models come with a left drain and 9 with a right drain, plus one with a reversible drain. The Atlantis Soho comes as separate left- and right-drain models, while the Anzzi Saba and Lexora Provenza let you choose the side when you order.
  • 60 x 32: 16 left-drain and 15 right-drain models, plus 3 reversible. The Lexora Provenza 60 x 32 is offered with a left drain only.
  • Center drain: every 60 x 40, 60 x 48 and 78-inch model in the chart lists a center drain, as do all 48 corner tubs.

Before you order, check the "Drain Location" line in the listing's specifications.

Soaking depth vs. overall height

Overall height is how tall the tub is on the outside. Soaking depth is how deep the water can get before it reaches the overflow drain, and it is always several inches less. The Atlantis Venetian 3660VNDR (36 x 60) is a good example: 23" tall overall, 19.9" deep inside and a 15.9" soaking depth.

Across the chart, listed soaking depth runs from 13" (the Atlantis Soho 60 x 32) to 18.375" (the Atlantis Charleston 48 x 78). The 60 x 30 tubs list 13.5" to 14", and the 72 x 42 tubs list 14.625" to 17". A larger footprint mostly buys room to stretch out, not much deeper water. Listed capacity doesn't follow footprint closely either: several 60 x 60 corner tubs list 40 gallons, less than the 50 gallons listed for most of our 60 x 30 tubs.

For a truly deep soak in a small space, the stone resin Japanese soaking tubs we carry fill to about 24 inches; see our Japanese soaking tub guide. Before you choose a large tub, also check your water heater. The tubs here list 30 to 80 gallons, and our two-person bathtub sizing guide explains why heater size matters for a big tub.

Soaking, whirlpool or air jets?

Almost every size comes in four versions. Across the chart there are 58 soaking tubs with no jets, 84 with whirlpool (water) jets, 86 with air jets and 164 with both.

  • Soaking (no jets): the Atlantis listings note that a soaking tub needs no electrical wiring.
  • Whirlpool, air or both: the jetted Atlantis listings that give a wattage list 1,650 or 2,200 watts. Plan the circuit with a licensed electrician, and leave an access panel for the pump or blower.

Our whirlpool vs. air jetted tub comparison explains how each type feels and how to keep it clean. Here is what's available at each size:

The Anzzi Saba and the Lexora Provenza 60 x 30 can be ordered with either drain, so they are counted under both left and right.

Before you order

  • Lead time: Atlantis Whirlpool tubs are made to order and ship in approximately 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Material: every tub in this chart whose listing names a material is acrylic (380 of the 390 listings). For how acrylic compares with other materials, see Acrylic vs. Stone Resin vs. Clawfoot Tubs.
  • Floor: a full tub is heavy. The Atlantis Caresse 5472C (72 x 54) lists 80 gallons, which is about 667 lbs of water at 8.34 lbs per gallon, before you add the tub and the bather. On an upper floor, have a contractor confirm the floor can carry it.
  • Faucet: a drop-in tub's faucet goes on the deck or on the wall. See our deck-mount Roman tub faucets.
  • Installer: have a licensed plumber confirm the drain position and deck framing (and an electrician for a jetted tub) before you order.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a 42 x 60 bathtub?

A 42 x 60 tub (also written 60 x 42) is 60 inches long and 42 inches wide. The 18 we carry are all Atlantis Whirlpool drop-in models. They measure 59.625" to 60" long and 41.5" to 42" wide, stand 23" tall and list a 16" soaking depth. Every 42 x 60 we carry is a drop-in tub, so it is installed in a deck rather than a standard 30- or 32-inch alcove. Example: the Atlantis Vogue 4260V 42 x 60 soaking tub.

Will a 72 x 42 tub fit in a standard alcove?

Not a 60-inch one. A 72 x 42 is 12 inches longer and 10 to 12 inches wider than a 60 x 30 or 60 x 32, and every 72 x 42 we carry is a drop-in tub, so it needs space for the tub plus its deck. The 57 models measure 70.75" to 72" by 41" to 42.25" and stand 23" tall. Example: the Atlantis Venetian 4272VN.

Is 30 x 60 the standard bathtub size?

60 x 30 is the size most people mean by a standard tub. We carry 17: 8 alcove tubs with a built-in front skirt and 9 drop-in models, with listed soaking depths of 13.5" to 14". If you have 2 more inches front to back, 60 x 32 gives you 34 models to choose from.

What is a 48 x 60 tub?

A 48 x 60 tub is 60 inches long and 48 inches wide. We carry 9, all Atlantis Whirlpool drop-in models from the Neptune and Rhode lines. They measure 59.5" to 60" by 47" to 47.25" and list a center drain, a 15" soaking depth and 65 gallons. Example: the Atlantis Neptune 4860N.

How do I know if I need a left-drain or right-drain tub?

Face the tub from outside it: if the drain is on your left, it's a left drain. If you're replacing an alcove tub, match the drain side you have unless you plan to move the plumbing. At 60 x 30, 9 of our models are available with a left drain and 9 with a right drain.

Do you carry 60 x 36 whirlpool tubs?

Yes. Of the 37 models we carry at 60 x 36, 8 have whirlpool jets and 16 combine whirlpool and air jets. All are Atlantis Whirlpool drop-in tubs, rectangular or oval, measuring 59" to 60" by 35.5" to 36". Example: the Atlantis Venetian 3660VNWL.

How big is a 60 x 60 corner soaking tub?

It is sold as a 5-foot (60 x 60) corner tub, but check the listing: ours give overall dimensions of 82" to 85" by 61.5" to 67.125". Eight of our 48 corner tubs are soaking tubs with no jets, including the Atlantis Cascade 6060C and the Anzzi Petra, with listed soaking depths of 14.25" to 17.125".

Can I get a 72 x 42 soaking tub without jets?

Yes, 7 of the 57: the Atlantis Vogue 4272V and 4272VC, Venetian 4272VN and 4272VNC, Polaris 4272P, Eros 4272E and Whisper 4272W. Their listed soaking depths run from 14.625" to 16.5".

Do you carry 48 x 48 corner tubs?

Not at the moment. Every corner tub in our catalog is a 60 x 60 model. For a smaller space, our Japanese soaking tubs start at 39 inches long.

Browse all bathtubs, or shop by type and size: alcove bathtubs, corner bathtubs, 60 x 42 bathtubs and 72 x 42 bathtubs. By brand, see the Atlantis Whirlpool collection for most of the sizes above, Anzzi soaker bathtubs for the Saba, Illyrian, Alya, Petra and Rana, or Lexora for the Provenza. The wider jetted models and the jetted corner tubs are also grouped in our two-person jetted tub collection. If you'd like a second look before you order, send us your measurements and the model you're considering, and we'll check them against the spec sheet.
