Walk-In Tub Buying Guide: Everything to Know Before You Choose
Walk-in tubs solve a real problem — safe, independent bathing — but the product pages can be overwhelming once you see how many configurations exist. This guide breaks down the decisions in order, from most to least important, so you can narrow the field fast. Not sure a walk-in tub is even the right fit? Start with our walk-in tub vs. shower comparison first.
1. Therapy Type — The Biggest Decision
This is the choice that most changes price and function: Soaking (no jets, least expensive), Air (full-body bubble massage), Whirlpool (targeted water jets for back/leg pain), or Whirlpool + Air (both combined, most expensive). We break down the full feature and price comparison in our Anzzi Coupe Series walk-in tub comparison.
2. Size
Walk-in tubs are sized to fit a standard tub alcove, typically around 60 in., with most models including a matching extension kit for retrofit installs. Measure your existing alcove before shopping — width and depth both matter, and not every therapy type is available at every size.
3. Drain Side
Left or right drain should match your existing plumbing rough-in whenever possible. Replacing an existing tub with the same drain side avoids relocating supply and drain lines, which keeps installation cost down.
4. What to Expect on Every Walk-In Tub
Regardless of brand or configuration, look for these as standard: a low entry threshold, a built-in grab bar, slip-resistant flooring, ADA-compliant seating, and a watertight door seal backed by a real warranty. These aren't upgrades — they're the reason to choose a walk-in tub in the first place, so don't pay a premium for a model that treats them as optional add-ons.
Prefer a Traditional Soaking Tub Instead?
If mobility isn't a primary concern and you want a freestanding centerpiece rather than a walk-in door, our soaking tub collection includes copper, cast iron, and acrylic options — including Magnus's hand-hammered copper pedestal tub line, which spans six named models (Kalida, Lutts, Monrovia, Vista, Arcadia, Findley) at different finishes and price points. See our full copper pedestal tub comparison.
