Magnus 141830 72" Extra Wide Crofton Acrylic Double-Slipper Freestanding Tub with Insulation

2 Person Soaking Tub vs Jetted Tub: Which Is Right for Two?

Quick answer: A soaking tub for two is a freestanding tub that sits on the floor and fills deep. Pick one if you want a long, still soak and a tub that's the centerpiece of the room. A jetted tub for two is a drop-in tub with whirlpool jets, air jets or both, built into a deck or surround. Pick one if you want massage, and plan the electrical work with it. There's also a middle option: most of our 2 person freestanding soaking tubs can be ordered with air jets built in.

Water depth and how much water it takes

Depth is what makes a soak feel like a soak. Here's what the listings say:

  • Magnus Pasco 74" Extra Wide acrylic: 15 1/2 in. of water to the overflow, 63 gallons. (see it)
  • Magnus Bazel 72" Extra Wide stone resin: 17 in. to the overflow, 120 gallons. (see it)
  • Magnus Crofton 67" Extra Wide/Extra Deep acrylic double slipper: 19 in. to the overflow. (see it)
  • Atlantis Whirlpool 2 person jetted tubs: a soaking depth of 14 to 18 3/8 in., and 40 to 80 gallons.

The deepest soaks for two are on the soaking side. If depth is your top need, see our extra-deep soaking tubs guide.

More water means a bigger hot water need. Before you choose a large tub of either kind, read the water heater section of our two-person bathtub sizing guide.

Installation: floor vs. deck

Freestanding soaking tubs need a clear floor spot, a drain in the right place and a filler. There's no deck to build. Most Magnus 2 person tubs have no faucet holes, so plan a floor-mount or wall-mount tub filler (see how to install a freestanding tub faucet). Heavy materials matter here: check the floor before ordering a cast iron or stone resin tub for two.

Jetted tubs are drop-in on every listing. That means a framed deck or surround around the tub. The pump sits on one side of the tub (each listing names the drain side and pump side), so plan where it goes. The jets also need power. Check the wattage on the listing and plan the circuit with your electrician.

Jets: what each kind gives you

Atlantis Whirlpool lists four types in our 2 person jetted collection:

  • Whirlpool (41 tubs): water jets for a targeted massage, plus a maintenance heater that keeps the bath warm.
  • Air (44 tubs): air jets for an all-over bubble massage. These listings don't include a heater.
  • Dual (44 tubs): whirlpool and air jets together, with the maintenance heater.
  • Deluxe (43 tubs): whirlpool and air jets, the maintenance heater, chromatherapy lights, an ozonator and touch-pad controls.

The Air Tub vs Whirlpool vs Combo guide goes deeper on how each one feels and how to keep it clean.

The middle option: a freestanding soaking tub with air jets

You don't have to give up the freestanding look to get jets. On 48 of our 62 2 person soaking tubs, Magnus offers an "Air Jets Included" option. The listings give the blower as 1,140 W (9.5 A at 120 V).

Two things to know before choosing it:

  • Tubs ordered with air jets are made to order and final sale. They can't be canceled, returned or refunded once production starts. Defects are still covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
  • The 4 cast iron, 3 stainless steel and 7 copper clawfoot models in this group don't offer the air-jet option.

An example: Magnus Crofton 72" Extra Wide acrylic double-slipper tub, 72 x 39 1/2 in., 42 gallons, foam insulated, with the air-jet option. (see it)

Size: how big for two?

  • Soaking: most of our 2 person freestanding tubs (53 of 62) are 66 to 72 in. long. The widest is the Magnus Foster 71" Extra Wide acrylic at 43 1/2 in. front to back. Several double slippers are 40 in. wide, like the Magnus Hernandez 72" x 40" hammered copper (see it).
  • Jetted: rectangular Atlantis tubs run about 59 1/2 to 83 3/4 in. long and 41 3/8 to 54 in. wide. One of the widest is the Atlantis Whirlpool Caresse 72 x 54 with 8 whirlpool and 31 air jets and 80 gallons (see it). For a corner, most models are 60 x 60, like the Atlantis Whirlpool Sublime 60 x 60 (see it).

The full width and shape guidance is in the two-person bathtub sizing guide.

Delivery

Both kinds ship by freight truck. Atlantis Whirlpool tubs come curbside, and the carrier calls to schedule. Delivery inside your home is available by quote. Measure doors, halls and stairs before you order: on 10 of these tubs, Magnus notes that the width is especially large and asks you to check door openings first.

How to choose

  • Choose a soaking tub if you want the deepest water, a freestanding centerpiece, no deck to build, or a material like copper, stone resin or cast iron. Then compare materials in Two-Person Freestanding Tubs Compared.
  • Choose a jetted tub if massage matters most, you're building a deck or corner surround anyway, and you can add the electrical circuit.
  • Choose a soaking tub with air jets if you want both the freestanding look and bubbles, and you're fine with a made-to-order, final-sale order.

FAQ

Is a soaking tub or a jetted tub better for two people?

It depends on what you want from the bath. A freestanding soaking tub gives the deepest water (up to 19 in. to the overflow in our 2 person collection). A drop-in jetted tub gives massage from whirlpool jets, air jets or both.

Can I get a freestanding 2 person tub with jets?

Yes. On 48 of our 62 Magnus 2 person freestanding tubs you can choose "Air Jets Included". Those orders are made to order and final sale once production starts.

Do 2 person jetted tubs need their own electrical circuit?

They need power for the pump or blower: 1,650 W for air-only or whirlpool-only Atlantis models, and 2,200 W for models with both. Check the listing and plan the circuit with your electrician.

Which holds more water, a soaking tub or a jetted tub?

It depends on the model. Our Atlantis 2 person jetted tubs hold 40 to 80 gallons. On the soaking side, Magnus lists 42 gallons for the Crofton 72" Extra Wide and 120 gallons for the Bazel stone resin tubs. Check your water heater first.

Do jetted tubs keep the water warm?

Atlantis whirlpool, dual and deluxe models list a maintenance heater that keeps the bath warm. Air-only models don't list one.

Can a jetted tub be freestanding?

Not in our 2 person jetted collection. Every Atlantis 2 person jetted tub is drop-in. For a freestanding tub with jets, look at the Magnus air-jet option above.
