How to Measure Your Bathroom for a New Vanity

Getting your measurements right before ordering a vanity saves you a return shipment and a lot of frustration. Here's what to measure and why each number matters. Not sure whether you need one basin or two? See our single vs. double sink vanity guide before you start measuring.

1. Available Wall Width

Measure the total wall space where the vanity will sit, then subtract a few inches on each side for clearance from adjacent walls, doors, or fixtures. Don't measure to the exact wall-to-wall distance — leave breathing room.

2. Depth From Wall to Obstruction

Measure how far the vanity can extend from the wall before hitting a toilet, tub, or door swing. Standard vanity depth is 21 inches, but slimmer 18-inch options exist for tight bathrooms.

3. Existing Plumbing Rough-In Locations

Note where your supply lines and drain currently come out of the wall or floor. If you're buying a vanity with a similar sink position to your old one, this usually lines up without extra plumbing work. 4. Door and Drawer Clearance

Check how far vanity doors and drawers will swing or slide open, and make sure nothing (a trash can, the door frame, a toilet) blocks that path.

5. Ceiling Height for Faucets and Mirrors
