SaunaSpa 3-person indoor infrared sauna in black Canadian hemlock

Home Sauna Buying Guide: Sizes, Power and Indoor vs Outdoor

The short answer: most home saunas are sized by how many people sit inside: 1 person, 1 to 2, 2, 3, or 4 to 5. Every cabin sauna we sell today is an indoor, far-infrared model that plugs into a standard 110 to 120 volt outlet, so no hardwiring is needed. They take up about 35 x 35 in. of floor for one person and up to about 73 x 73 in. for four to five, stand 75 to 78 in. tall, and start at $1,530 as of October 2026.

Every size, wattage and price in this guide comes from our own product listings, read on October 22, 2026: 14 cabin saunas from SaunaSpa and SteamSpa, plus two portable infrared saunas. Exact specs vary by model, so always check the product page and installation manual before you order.

How much space does a home sauna need?

  • 1 person: the SC-SS0013-GS is 35.4 x 35.4 in..
  • 1 to 2 people: 40 x 46 in. to 47 x 49.5 in. for the square models. The round SaunaSpa SC-SS0025 is 51 x 51 in.
  • 2 people: 47 x 41 in. to 47 x 47 in.
  • 3 people: about 40 x 60 in. to 43.3 x 63 in. These are long and narrow, so they fit along a wall.
  • 4 to 5 people: the SC-SS0010-0S is 72.7 x 72.7 in. with a polygon (many-sided) shape.
  • Height: every cabin is 74.8 to 78 in. tall on the outside. Inside, they are 68.5 to 74 in. tall.

Add room to open the glass door and to put the panels together. The installation manual on each product page shows the clearance that model needs around it.

Power: what outlet does a home sauna need?

All 14 cabin saunas we list run on 110 to 120 volts and plug in. Their heaters are rated from 1,725 to 2,300 watts. Divide the watts by the volts and you get the current: about 14 to 19 amps at 120 volts. That is a large load for one outlet, so check the installation manual for the circuit your model calls for. If you are not sure your outlet and circuit can carry it, have a licensed electrician look before the sauna arrives.

Some saunas, often larger ones with a traditional rock heater, are hardwired to a 240 volt circuit instead of plugged in. For any hardwired sauna, the hookup is a job for a licensed electrician, following the manual.

Infrared or traditional?

  • Far infrared (all 14 of our cabins): carbon heating panels in the walls warm the room. Our listings give a top temperature of 149°F, or 151°F on the SC-SS0013-GS and SC-SS0014-GS.
  • Infrared plus red light: the SC-SS0011-0S, SC-SS0025 and SC-SS0029-0S add red light heating tubes to the far-infrared panels.
  • Full spectrum: the SaunaSpa SC-SS0023-2P uses full spectrum infrared panels with red light heaters, plus heaters built into the floor.
  • Traditional: a traditional sauna heats the air with an electric heater and a tray of sauna stones, and you can pour water on the stones for steam. We do not list a traditional sauna right now.

Indoor or outdoor?

Every cabin sauna we list today is made for indoor use. An indoor sauna is not built to stand in the rain and snow, so do not set one up outside. Outside, you need a sauna its maker rates for outdoor use. We will add outdoor models to this guide when we list them.

Wood and what is included

  • Wood: all 14 cabins are hemlock. The SC-SS0013-GS and SC-SS0014-GS have plywood in the rear panel. The SaunaSpa SC-SS0029-0S and SC-SS0025-0SBK are black hemlock.
  • Door: every cabin has a tempered glass door.
  • Controls and sound: each listing includes a control panel, and most include Bluetooth audio with speakers (check each listing). The SaunaSpa SC-SS0025 and SC-SS0029-0S add WiFi for app control.
  • Lights: each cabin has built-in lights; many have color lights.
  • Warranty: most are 5 years on the wood and 1 year on electrical parts. The SC-SS0013-GS covers electrical parts for 2 years, and the SC-SS0023-2P covers the wood cabin for 3 years.
  • Weight and delivery: the SteamSpa cabins weigh 214 to 467 lb, and the SaunaSpa listings note curbside delivery. Plan for help to carry the panels inside.

Which home sauna should you choose?

  • Tight space or one user: the 1-person SC-SS0013-GS at 35.4 x 35.4 in.
  • Two people on a budget: the 1 to 2 person SteamSpa models from $1,700, or the 2-person SaunaSpa SC-SS0015-0S at $1,899.24.
  • A long wall: a 3-person model, about 40 to 43 in. deep and 60 to 63 in. long.
  • A family: the 4 to 5 person SC-SS0010-0S.
  • A look that stands out: the round SaunaSpa SC-SS0025 or the black hemlock models.

Portable 1-person saunas

For a sauna you can put away, the SteamSpa portable infrared saunas (Royal Blue, $210.00, and Sunset, $217.50) are fold-up 1-person saunas with a folding chair. They plug into a 120 volt outlet, use 1,050 watts (6.65 amps) and heat up to 140°F. See them in SteamSpa Portable Saunas.

Frequently asked questions

What outlet do I need for a home sauna?

Every cabin sauna we list plugs into a 110 to 120 volt outlet and draws about 14 to 19 amps. Check the installation manual for the circuit it needs, and ask a licensed electrician if you are not sure your outlet can carry it.

Do I need an electrician for a home sauna?

For the plug-in models we sell, you may not need one if your outlet and circuit already match what the manual calls for. If they do not, or you are not sure, call a licensed electrician. A hardwired 240 volt sauna should always be connected by a licensed electrician.

How much space do I need for a 2-person sauna?

Our 2-person cabins take 47 x 41 in. to 47 x 47 in. of floor and stand 75 to 77 in. tall. Add room to open the door.

Can I put an indoor sauna outside?

No. The cabins we list are indoor models. Outside, you need a sauna rated for outdoor use.

What is the difference between infrared and traditional saunas?

An infrared sauna uses heating panels in the walls; ours reach up to 149°F to 151°F. A traditional sauna heats the air with an electric heater and sauna stones, and you can add water to the stones for steam.

Is a steam sauna the same as an infrared sauna?

No. An infrared sauna warms you with heating panels. All of ours are far infrared, plug into a 110 to 120 volt outlet and reach up to 149°F to 151°F (140°F on the portables). A steam room is an enclosed shower or room where a steam generator turns water into steam, so the generator is installed with a water supply. The SteamSpa steam generators we list run on 240 volts, and some packages include a Plumber Ready Quick Connection Kit. See them in SteamSpa Steam Generators.

Does a home sauna need plumbing?

The infrared saunas we list are electric plug-in units. Each of their 16 product pages lists plug-in power at 120 volts (110 to 120 volts on the cabins), and none of them lists a water line or drain connection. Check the installation manual for the outlet and circuit your model needs. A steam room is different: its steam generator needs a water supply and a 240 volt circuit.

How much does a home sauna cost?

As of October 2026, our cabin saunas start at $1,530.00 for 1 person and run to $4,617.90 for the round black SaunaSpa. Portable infrared saunas start at $210.00.
