Shower Door Replacement: Frameless vs. Semi-Frameless vs. Framed Compared

Shower Door Replacement: Frameless vs. Semi-Frameless vs. Framed Compared

Replacing a shower door comes down to three real decisions: hinged or sliding, what frame style, and getting the width right. Using real dimensions and prices from our in-stock catalog, here's what actually changes between the options — and where the price differences really come from.

Frame style: the biggest price driver

Prices shown are regular prices. When a product is on sale, the lower price appears on its product page.

Frame Style What It Means Price Range (comparable widths)
Framed Full metal frame around every glass edge — most support, most budget-friendly $399.00–$499.99
Semi-Frameless Partial frame, typically just at the hinges/track $299.99–$499.99
Frameless No metal frame — thicker glass does the structural work $449.99–$949.99

The real pattern across our entire Anzzi shower door lineup: frameless consistently costs more than framed at the same width — for example, the 24" Fellow (frameless, $449.99) costs more than the similarly-sized 33" Welle or Himmel (framed, both $399.99). That's not a fluke; frameless doors use thicker tempered glass to stay rigid without a metal frame, and that glass is the expensive part. If budget is the priority and you're not set on the frameless look, a framed or semi-frameless door gets you the same opening covered for less.

Hinged doors (fixed width)

Model Width Frame Price
Lancer 23" 23 in. Semi-Frameless $299.99
Lancer 29" 29 in. Semi-Frameless $349.99
Himmel 33.6" 33.6 in. Framed $399.99
Fellow 24" 24 in. Frameless $449.99
Castle 49" 49 in. Semi-Frameless $479.99
Consort 60" 60 in. Frameless $549.99

Hinged doors need clearance to swing open — measure the floor space in front of the opening, not just the opening itself, before choosing a hinged replacement over a sliding one.

Sliding doors (adjustable width range)

Most sliding doors are sold to fit a width range rather than one exact measurement (e.g. "45 to 48 in.") — the track adjusts within that range, so you don't need an exact-inch match to your existing opening.

Model Width Range Frame Price
Accordion 33" x 56" 33 in. Framed $399.00
Mare 35" x 76" 35 in. Framed $429.99
Rhodes 45–48" 45–48 in. Frameless $449.99
Halberd 47–48" 47–48 in. Framed $449.99
Longboat 56–60" 56–60 in. Semi-Frameless $499.99
Halberd 59–60" 59–60 in. Framed $499.99
Stellar 57–60" 57–60 in. Frameless $599.99
Madam 56–60" 56–60 in. Frameless $679.99
Mountain 60" 60 in. Frameless $949.99

Same pattern holds at sliding-door scale: framed options top out around $499.99 even at 59–60" wide, while frameless options run $449.99 up to $949.99 for the same width range — the Mountain's premium price adds a soft-close mechanism and reversible installation on top of the frameless glass.

A few Stellar Series sliding doors are also sold bundled with a matching alcove shower base ($1,019.99–$1,049.99) — that's a complete enclosure kit, not a directly comparable door-only price, so we left those out of the tables above.

The safety standard that doesn't change

Every door in our Anzzi lineup uses ANSI-certified tempered glass with Tsunami Guard water-repellent shielding to resist cloudy buildup — that's true at every price point and frame style, from the $299.99 Lancer up to the $949.99 Mountain. You're not trading away glass safety by choosing a cheaper option; the price difference is about frame material and mechanism, not structural safety.

Measuring for a replacement

Measure your existing opening at the widest point, and check whether your current door is hinged or on a sliding track — replacing a sliding opening with a hinged door (or vice versa) may require different wall prep. For sliding doors, confirm your opening falls within the model's stated adjustable range rather than assuming any "around that size" door will fit; the ranges above are the actual engineered fit window, not a rough estimate.
