Linear shower drain installed in tiled shower floor

How to Install a Linear Shower Drain

A linear shower drain runs along one edge of the shower floor instead of sitting in the center, which allows for a single-direction slope and works especially well in curbless or zero-entry shower designs. Installation happens during the shower floor build, not after.

1. Plan the Drain Placement

Linear drains are typically installed along a wall edge, allowing the shower floor to slope in one direction toward the drain rather than sloping from all four sides toward a center point. Decide on placement before framing or pouring the shower base.

2. Rough In the Drain Body

The drain's waste line connects to your existing plumbing during the rough-in stage, with the drain body set at the correct height relative to the finished floor.

3. Slope the Shower Pan Toward the Drain

Using mortar or a pre-sloped shower pan system, build the floor so it slopes consistently toward the linear drain's full length — typically a 1/4 inch per foot slope.

4. Waterproof the Area

Apply a waterproofing membrane over the mortar bed and drain flange, following the drain manufacturer's specific waterproofing instructions, since linear drains often have their own membrane collar system.

5. Tile Up to the Drain

Lay tile so it meets the drain's edge cleanly on all sides, then install the drain's grate or cover once tile work is complete.

What to Check Before You Buy

  • Choose a drain length that matches or exceeds your shower floor's width
  • Decide between a tile-insert grate (for a seamless look) or a decorative grate style
  • Confirm your waste line can accommodate the drain's outlet position (center or end outlet)
