How to Choose a Bathroom Exhaust Fan
A bathroom without proper ventilation eventually shows it — peeling paint, foggy mirrors that never clear, and in worse cases, mold behind the drywall. An exhaust fan sized and chosen correctly solves all of that, but "correctly" depends on more than just picking whatever fan looks the least bulky.
Sizing by CFM
CFM (cubic feet per minute) measures how much air the fan moves, and it's the single most important spec. The baseline rule of thumb is 1 CFM per square foot of bathroom floor area for rooms up to about 100 square feet. So an 80-square-foot bathroom needs at least an 80 CFM fan. For larger bathrooms, or ones with a separate toilet room, an 8-foot ceiling, or a steam shower installed, add extra CFM on top of the baseline — undersizing is the most common ventilation mistake, since an underpowered fan runs constantly without ever actually clearing the humidity.
Noise Ratings (Sones)
Fan noise is rated in sones, not decibels, and lower is quieter. For reference, 1.0 sone is roughly as quiet as a refrigerator hum, while older fans in the 4.0+ sone range are noticeably loud. Most modern fans fall between 0.3 and 3.0 sones — if noise is a concern (a fan right outside a shared wall, for example), look specifically at the sone rating rather than assuming a higher CFM means a louder fan; the two aren't directly linked.
Humidity-Sensing Fans
A humidity-sensing fan automatically switches on when it detects rising moisture in the air and shuts off once humidity returns to normal, rather than relying on a wall switch someone has to remember to use. This is worth the extra cost for:
- Bathrooms without a window, where trapped humidity has nowhere else to go
- Households where the fan is frequently left off out of habit
- Bathrooms with a steam shower or soaking tub that generates heavier, longer-lasting humidity
Other Features to Consider
- Combination fan/light units reduce the number of ceiling fixtures needed, common in smaller bathrooms
- A built-in night light or LED panel can replace a separate fixture during a remodel
- Timer or delay-off switches keep the fan running for a set period after you leave, which helps fully clear humidity
What to Check Before You Buy
- Measure your bathroom's square footage to confirm the minimum CFM you need
- Confirm your existing duct size and ceiling joist spacing match the new fan's housing dimensions
- Check the sone rating if the fan will run near a bedroom or shared wall
